Selecting the Right Study Programs in Germany

Germany offers many courses and degree options and with so many options available, choosing only one is a tough and sturdy job. Adequate research, planning and the right timing and advice, can land you in the college and the course of your choice.

Before applying, make sure about the course and university you want to get in. Following pointers should be followed before applying:

Define and Decide: 

Determine your aims and goals. Decide about the course and the university you want to go to. Start here. At the outset of the study abroad process, you need to look at your reasons for wanting to study abroad, as well as what is within the scope of possibility academically.

Research about the required course and the college you desire to apply to: Research the course, colleges and check the online course brochure for information such as, special requirements and eligibility. Also, jot down the colleges that offer the course that you want to take on.


Select your program and study mode

- Select your program and location (e.g.,  bachelor, postgraduate, Doctoral)
- Decide on the study mode
- Check availability of the course according to your preferred study location
- Check entry requirements

Academic Requirements

The academic requirements (including evidence of English and German language skills) will vary depending on the level of education and province in Germany. The credit policy differs for every University and Course. So, research about the same and apply. Read Student visa information clearly and also, check the closing dates for the course.Universities can have different entry requirements, so read the course information on their website carefully and contact them.

Entry requirements for the different levels of study:

- Diplom - To get into Diplom courses, you need to hold minimum higher second class in HSC. However, some courses may have specific pre-requisite subjects.

- Higher Education Bachelor - To gain entry into a German Bachelor course you will need to hold a German Higher Secondary Certificate of Education (Year 12), or the overseas equivalent. Some bachelor courses may also have specific pre-requisite subjects.

- Higher Education Master - As well as the satisfactory completion of at least one degree at bachelor level, the institution may get hold research ability or relevant work experience into consideration. You need to hold any of the following: Bachelor, Magister, Diplom or State Examination to get into the Master’s program.

- Higher Education Doctoral- The Doctoral Degree is the highest award offered by German universities. You need a Diplom (from a Universitat), Magister, Master's or Staatsexamen to get into doctoral program.

English Language Requirement

In order to apply for higher education degree in Germany an English proficiency test is required. Either a good TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score for courses that are conducted in English.

German Language Requirement

If the course is completely in German, then proof of proficiency in German Language

- TestDaF (Test of German as a Foreign Language): It is an advanced level exam that facilitates admission to university.
- DSH (Deutsche Sprachprufung fur den Hochschulzugang): German Language Test for the Admission of Foreign study applicants.Check if you are eligible for credit

Apply to accredited colleges

Check whether the college meets a minimal set of standards or not. Visit their respective websites and know more about the affiliation/accreditation.  It is important to be sure that the colleges to which you are applying are accredited by a recognized accrediting authority.

Check the number of International Students on Campus

If there are many international students on campus, the school is more likely to be sensitive to the needs of students from other countries.
