Admission Procedure for Higher Studies in Germany

Germany is known for its incredible environment and quality of life, and provides a range of study and research opportunities. German institutions of higher education are state-funded. The eligibility criteria may differ from university to university.

According to the German educational system, you need to complete secondary education in order to get admission in bachelor’s degree  and a three year bachelor’s degree to apply for master’s degree. Besides, some universities demand for a four year program equivalent to consider you for any master's disciplines.

Along with completing academic essentialities, English and German Language are also essential criteria for admissions.

Academic Requirements

The academic requirements (including evidence of English and German language skills) will vary depending on the level of education and province in Germany. Universities can have different entry requirements, so read the course information on their website carefully and contact them. Entry requirements for the different levels of study:

Diplom– To get into Diplom courses, you need to hold minimum higher second class in HSC. However, some courses may have specific pre-requisite subjects.

Higher Education Bachelor- To gain entry into a  bachelor course you will need to hold a German higher secondary certificate of education (Year 12), or the overseas equivalent. Some bachelor courses may also have specific pre-requisite subjects.

Higher Education Master - As well as the satisfactory completion of at least one degree at bachelor level, the institution may get hold research ability or relevant work experience into consideration. You need to hold any of the following: bachelor, magister, diplom or state examination to get into the master’s programme.

Higher Education Doctoral- The doctoral degree is the highest award offered by German universities. You need a diplom (from a Universitat), magister, master's or Staatsexamen to get into doctoral programme.

Application Procedure

If you are planning to apply to a university, then you must start few months in advance i.e. before the commencement of the session. Any queries regarding the details of the course must be put forth during the early stages of applying procedure.

Abide by the following steps:
  • Shortlist the university & course from databases such as or
  • Make a list of all requirements & application deadlines
  • Take the required language proficiency tests or subject tests.
  • Fill out the application either online/offline
  • Research and apply for scholarship if information available
  • Dispatch the application well in advance with necessary documentation. You will need to prepare supporting documentation to send with your application. The documents vary depending on the course, provider, province and qualification you're studying for. The most significant documents include:
  • Academic Records: This includes scores, GPA and official certificates.
  • Attested transcripts, such as, semester mark sheets, transfer certificate, awards of distinction, technical paper presentation, project work, special courses relevant to the field of study undertaken, letters of appreciation / achievement if any, special skills and proof of leadership qualities
  • Bachelor’s or master's degree certificates/provisional certificates.
  • English and Germany language proficiency certificates.
  • Standardized test scores, if any.
  • Work history (for postgraduate and doctorate programmes)
  • Admission essay or covering letter justifying why you should be given admission and statement of purpose.
  • Recommendation letters from university staff / corporate executive who has supervised your work.
  • Certificates or documents which verify previous study or work experience if you are seeking course credits.
  • Enclose proof of application fee payment if any
  • Follow up with course coordinator to cross verify if the application has reached
  • Start making arrangements for financial backing. Apply for educational loan, if needed
  • If the application is successful, you will receive an ‘Acceptance Letter. On receiving this, you need to pay a portion of the fees within a stipulated time period, to confirm your admission and sign and send the letter indicating your willingness to join. The payment of fees varies according to the university you have chosen. The acceptance letter is a contract between you and the institution. It sets out the course you will be enrolled in, enrollment conditions, the fees you need to pay, and the refund payable if you don’t finish your course with that provider. This contract is very important – if you don’t start your course, or finish your course, this written agreement will be used to determine if you will get a refund.
