Bachelor Degree Admission Procedure- International Students

Bachelor degree studies (as well adverted to as undergraduate studies) lead to the award of a bachelor degree (after 3 or 4 years of study), i.e. B.A, B.Sc., B. of engineering undergraduate programmes have a duration of either six to eight semesters or 3 to 4 years. The bachelor degree is the base university qualification.

Entrance/Test Requirements

Entry into undergraduate degree course of studies in Germany is highly competitive. The most important prerequisite is English or German language proficiency. At all German universities, English or German is the language of instruction. An applicant has to provide evidence of proficiency in the English or German language.

Other Requirements

Successful completion of the international equivalent of German secondary education (Year 12). Most German universities require a minimum of 12 years of formal secondary education for admission to Bachelor programme.

International Students

English Language Admission test: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam scores are the most common language requirement for German universities. But most universities will accept either test as proof of your English language ability. If the course is in English, then proof of proficiency in English – TOEFL (550 and higher (PBT), 213 and higher (CBT), 79 and higher (IBT)) or IELTS 6.0

German Language test:
If the course is completely in German, then proof of proficiency in German Language
TestDaF (Test of German as a Foreign Language): It is an advanced level exam that facilitates admission to university.
DSH (Deutsche Sprachprufung fur den Hochschulzugang): German language test for the admission of foreign study applicants.

Other Requirements

  • Successful completion of the international equivalent of German secondary education (Year 12)
  • Diploma or acceptable certification of graduation from high school in your home country.
  • Minimum GPA 2.78 or 3.00 is needed to get into undergraduate programme in Germany.
  • Each education provider will have different entrance requirements such as prior knowledge in certain subject, work or volunteer experience, portfolio, official academic transcripts, test or interview.  Prerequisite subjects differ from course to course.

Duration

The duration of bachelor degree programme is generally three or four years' full-time study or part-time equivalent.

Academic Calendar

The academic calendar at German universities runs from October to July and is divided into two semesters. There are intakes for winter and summer semesters, the winter semester starts in October and the summer semester starts in April. Usually the deadline for the winter semester is the 15th of July and for the summer semester it is the 15th of January.

Admission procedure

The admission process involves following steps:

  1. Fill out the application form either online/offline.In the form, fill the following sections and submit:
    • Personal details
    • Academic history
    • Supplement information
    • Course chosen
  2. Submit the supporting documents such as attested official transcripts in English from all high school coursework, test scores of IELTS/TOEFL, standardized tests scores if any, letters of recommendation, reference/personal statement, and covering letter.
  3. If the application is successful, the applicant will receive “Acceptance Letter”. On receiving this, you need to pay certain percentage of the fees within a stipulated time period, to confirm your admission and sign and send the same as a token of confirmation. During enrollment, you must carry copies of the acceptance letter, study/work permit and any other details that are mandatory for admission. The fee structure varies according to the university you have chosen.
  4. Set up in advance the accommodation in the student residences or university hostels and ask for any financial support, if available.
  5. Apply for a Student Visa
    • To apply for a student visa to Germany students most have the following documents:
    • Original passport with two passport size photographs
    • Authenticated copy of a school leaving certificate
    • Official transcripts and attested copies of the same.
    • If attending a course in German, proof of your proficiency in the German language or an intensive language course of twenty hours a week in Germany.
    • Proof of adequate funds to finance the period of study
    • Proof of registration with a German higher education institution, i.e. admission letter or acceptance letter.
