GRE - Graduate Record Examination

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE), managed and regulated by the Educational Testing Service, measures the verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills of the applicants. GRE involves two types of tests- Subject Tests or the General Test. A computer-based GRE revised general test is offered in Germany.

Eligibility

Prospective graduate and business school applicants from all around the globe, who are interested in pursuing a master's in business or doctoral degree, or MBA, take the GRE revised General Test. GRE scores act as a catalyst to your admission procedure.

Format

The duration of the computer-based GRE revised General Test is approximately three hours and forty-five minutes.
Test format and Duration of Computer-based test
The computer-based test has three major sections:
  1. Analytical Writing: It involves two questions based on issues and arguments, i.e., “Analyze an Issue” and “Analyze an Argument” task. Both the tasks are about 30 minutes each.

  2. Verbal Reasoning: There are two sections and consists of 20 questions each and is about 30 minutes per section.

  3. Quantitative Reasoning: There are two sections consisting of 20 questions each and is of 35 minutes per section.

Registration Process

Computer-based Test
There are four ways to register for the computer-based test:
  • Online –Register online at https://mygre.ets.org/greweb/login/login.jsp . Pay the fee by credit/debit cards: American Express, JCB, Discover, VISA or MasterCard.

  • By phone – To register by phone, call your Regional Registration Center (RRC) at least 2 business days before the desired test date. You will then receive a confirmation number, the address of your test center and your test date. Pay the fee using American Express, JCB, Discover, and VISA, MasterCard or a voucher number.

  • By fax –Send the International Test Scheduling Form by fax to your RRC. A confirmation number with the time and the address of your test center will be sent to you by e-mail, fax or mail.

  • By mail –Mail the International Test Scheduling Form to your RRC together with the payment.

Fees

The GRE fee varies from year to year. Check the official website for payment details and there is an additional fee being charged for rescheduling and cancellation of GRE revised test, or for additional report scores.

Results and Scoring

The score scales for each section of the GRE revised General Test are determined. Verbal Reasoning scores are reported on a 130 – 170 score scale, in 1-point increments. Quantitative Reasoning scores are reported on a 130 – 170 score scale, in 1-point increments and Analytical Writing scores are reported on a 0 – 6 score level, in half-point increments. Based on the scaled scores, percentile ranks are determined. Percentile ranks indicate the percentage of examinees that scored below your score.

The results and scores of all computer-based tests are released 10 - 15 days after the test date and for the paper-based test, official scores are sent out within six weeks of the test date.
